Designated Artistic Director
CHENG Tsung-lung joined Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan in 2002 and started creating dance works. After winning top prizes in international choreography competitions, including the Premio Roma Danza International Choreography Competition, he was appointed in 2014 as the artistic director for Cloud Gate 2. In 2020, CHENG will succeed Lin Hwai-min as the artistic director of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan.
CHENG’s family owns a slipper factory in the oldest area of Taipei City in Taiwan, a historic harbor town rich with ancient temples and festival parades. Hawking slippers on sidewalks was part of his life in childhood and adolescence. The dynamics of religious rites and street life later became the source of inspiration for his choreography.
CHENG’s 13 Tongues from 2016 unfolds a part-real, part-dream world. Against a colorful, abstract projection, dancers in black, chanting Taoist mantra and singing folk tunes, squat and stride in steps evolved from ritualistic dance. They run and scream while an image of a giant carp swiftly appears and vanishes like a mythical messenger above their heads. Wild and subtle, this work evokes fantastical cultural memories lost in the hustle and bustle of modern cities. 13 Tongues has won rave reviews and is scheduled to tour London, Paris, Stockholm and cities in the US in 2020.
If 13 Tongues wanders in the alley of an old town, his 22° Lunar Halo ventures into a dark domain belonging to a digital future of the 21st century.
A sequel to Full Moon, created for Sydney Dance Company in 2017, 22° Lunar Halo is acclaimed as a work full of “fierce beauty” (Seeing Dance). It features music specially arranged by Icelandic avant-garde rock band Sigur Rós and three gigantic LED panels on which human figures and body parts juxtapose surreal images crafted from the nature. Tribal-like group dances restlessly move away or towards an ominous “black hole,” foreboding an apocalypse where “civilization is falling apart.” Stunning and mesmerizing, this powerful creation of CHENG has brought the house down in its premiere season in 2019, garnering invitations from worldwide since.
