Cloud Gate Performs SOUNDING LIGHT at Setouchi Triennale
On August 23, Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan presented Sounding Light, choreographed by Artistic Director CHENG Tsung-lung, at Japan’s Setouchi Triennale. The performance took place on a century-old rural Kabuki stage in Shikoku Mura museum. At dusk, dancers moved through wood and stone, their breath and voices resonating across the open air, as hundreds of audience members watched in silence and awe.
The Setouchi Triennale, held every three years, revitalizes island communities through art and architecture. Invited by Festival Director Fram KITAGAWA, Cloud Gate selected this unique site to bring their nature-inspired work into dialogue with local history and landscape.
The company also performed Dancing with Cloud Gate at Tsuda no Matsubara, a newly opened Triennale site and one of Japan’s "Top 100 Seaside Pine Forests." In a three-sided performance space, Cloud Gate invited residents to join in movement, creating a heartfelt cultural exchange through shared rhythm and memory.
Cloud Gate now returns to Taiwan to premiere CHENG’s new work ALL EARS, a theater experience guided by sound. Later this year, WAVES will tour three cities in Japan—Yokohama, Kyoto, and Kitakyushu—continuing the company’s cross-cultural journey.
