Nothing Between Body and Earth

Nothing Between Body and Earth is a cinematic collaboration between Cloud Gate Artistic Director CHENG Tsung-lung and CHUAN Ming-yuan, a 2022 Venice Film Festival Immersive Experience winner. The film features music by Lim Giong, the winner of the 2013 Georges Delerue Prize for Best Music in Belgium.

Inspired by the Buddhist concept of "The non-duality of body and land," the film explores the connection between humans and their environment, as well as the symbiotic relationship between body and nature. Utilizing macro high-speed photography techniques, the film showcases the graceful movements of Cloud Gate dancer HUANG Mei-ya, offering a captivating and visually stunning cinematic experience with meticulous detail and majestic scope.

Concept CHENG Tsung-lung

CHENG Tsung-lung

From selling slippers as a street hawker to becoming an internationally recognized choreographer, CHENG Tsung-lung succeeded LIN Hwai-min in 2020 as Artistic Director of Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan. CHENG is best known for works inspired by the street life and folk religion of his upbringing and for experimenting with sound and technology. His works include 13 Tongues (2016), Lunar Halo (2019), Sounding Light (2020), Send in a Cloud (2022), WAVES (2023) and All Ears (2023) In 2020, CHENG was featured in Routledge’s Fifty Contemporary Choreographers.

Cinematographer and Editor CHUAN Ming-yuan

CHUAN Ming-yuan

CHUAN Ming-yuan is an experienced visual creator specialized in cinematography and visual effects. He produced many renowned music videos when he was the VFX supervisor in Grass Jelly Studio.
CHUANG had over 8 years of experience in VR film production as the VR supervisor and cinematographer in Funique VR Studio. He created some of the most memorable VR experiences in Taiwan such as Your Spiritual Temple Sucks, HOME and The Man Who Couldn’t Leave. As VR Supervisor, he had 6 VR films selected for the Venice Film Festival. The Man Who Couldn’t Leave won the 2022 Venice Immersive Best Experience Award.

Music LIM Giong

LIM Giong

LIM Giong began his music career as a singer-songwriter before moving behind the scenes and engaging with DJs. Encouraged by filmmaker HOU Hsiao-hsien, he began composing film soundtrack with "Goodbye South, Goodbye", and has since written music for feature films, short films, advertisements, animations, and documentaries.

From 2004 onward, LIM’s collaboration across artistic disciplines led his work toward more experimental and are increasingly infused with electronic music, evolving drum and bass, breakbeat, ambient, and electronica. His distinctive sound has shaped several works by choreographer CHENG Tsung-lung including 13 Tongues (2016), Full Moon (2017), Multiplication (2019), and Sounding Light (2020). Most recently, LIM composed the music for Nothing Between Body and Earth, a film co-directed by CHENG Tsung-lung and CHUAN Ming-yuan.

Dancer HUANG Mei-Ya

Huang Mei-ya

Born in Tainan, Taiwan, Huang Mei-ya graduated from the Department of Dance at Taipei National University of the Arts and joined Cloud Gate in 2007. She was promoted to Rehearsal Assistant in 2022.

Her solo in Moon Water offered a wholly new interpretation, while her solo in White Water unfolded a quiet emotional depth, evoking the poetic line, “Such feelings can only be recalled again; It seemed long lost even when it was felt then.”

HUANG’s other performance credits include Portrait of the Families, Cursive Trilogy, Water Stains on the Wall, Rice, Nine Songs, Dust, Formosa, 13 Tongues, Lunar Halo, Send in a Cloud, WAVES, All Ears, and Legacy, the classic revival for Cloud Gate’s 50th anniversary.
