A Circuitous Way Home: Bulareyaung Dance Company, a contemporary aboriginal dance theater

After returning to his hometown Taitung in 2014, Choreographer Bulareyaung Pagarlava founded the Bulareyaung Dance Company. This year in November, the Company will present LIMA Five at the Cloud Gate Theater as part of the five-year retrospective series.

The Company has been making coveted achievements ever since its founding. Its Stay That Way won the 16th Taishin Performing Arts Award in 2017, and its LUNA won the 17th Taishin Arts Award Grand Prize in 2018. By digging deep into his own aboriginal history of the body, Bulareyaung not only learns from the traditional culture, but also aims to create a contemporary aboriginal theater. His works have grandly become the most lively and delightful scenery in the field of contemporary art in Taiwan. The Classroom invited Professor CHEN Ya-ping from School of Dance, Taipei National University of the Arts to give an in-depth talk on aboriginal dance, identity seeking, and Bulareyaung’s works from a broad perspective.
