Cloud Gate Summer Dance Intensive 2026 Concludes, Bringing Dancers from Nine Countries Together at Cloud Gate Theater

Cloud Gate Dance Theatre held its inaugural Dance Intensive this July, offering two five-day programs in Chinese and English. The programme attracted nearly 100 applicants from around the world, with 44 participants ultimately joining the intensive. The Chinese-language programme welcomed dancers from Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Malaysia, while the English-language programme brought together participants from Singapore, the United States, Italy, Japan, Brazil, Canada, Australia, Argentina, and Poland. Throughout the five-day intensive programme, participants experienced Cloud Gate's distinctive movement practice firsthand.

Led by Cloud Gate's Associate Artistic Director Lee Ching-chun, who has danced with the company for more than three decades, the programme drew on Cloud Gate's five decades of movement training and artistic practice. Participants from diverse cultural backgrounds explored how the company approaches movement and choreography while gaining insight into the cultural influences that shape its works.

The curriculum introduced participants to Cloud Gate's distinctive movement practice, shaped by Eastern movement traditions such as Tai Chi Daoyin and internal martial arts, alongside contemporary dance techniques. Led by senior Cloud Gate dancers, participants explored Cloud Gate's repertoire through excerpts from Moon Water, Pine Smoke, 13 Tongues, and Lunar Halo, experiencing the distinct aesthetics of different generations of Cloud Gate's repertoire and discovering how the company's movement language has continued to evolve.

Participants also observed company rehearsals, gaining a close-up view of how choreographers and dancers refine and shape each work throughout the creative process. Lee noted that Founder Lin Hwai-min and Artistic Director Cheng Tsung-lung both drew from Eastern and Western movement traditions in developing their artistic practices. Guided by their individual life experiences and artistic visions, each developed a distinctive choreographic aesthetic, allowing Cloud Gate's movement language to continue evolving and expanding into new possibilities

During Cloud Gate's annual outdoor performance at the National Theater and Concert Hall Plaza in Taipei, participants in the English-language programme also experienced ALL EARS, an annual outdoor dance event that gathers tens of thousands of people together under the open sky.

More than a dance intensive programme, the Dance Intensive allowed participants to deepen their understanding of dance through movement practice, creative thinking, and artistic exploration. It also marked the first time Cloud Gate shared its five decades of accumulated movement practice and creative approach with the public, inviting dancers to experience the company's artistic practice from within.

Cloud Gate plans to offer the Dance Intensive again next summer, with registration expected to open in early 2027. The company looks forward to welcoming more dance enthusiasts to experience Cloud Gate's movement practice and connect through artistic and cultural exchange.
