Korea’s National Jeongdong Theater Makes Its Taiwan Debut, Showcasing Traditional Arts with a Contemporary Twist
Located in Jeongdong, the birthplace of modern Korean culture, the National Jeongdong Theater of Korea was established in 1995 to honor and revive the legacy of Korea’s first modern theater, the historic Wongaksa Theater. Since its founding, the theater has served as a dynamic cultural platform—presenting innovative performances, supporting emerging playwrights and performers, and fostering meaningful exchange between artists and audiences.
On March 23, 2021, the theater was officially elevated to national status and underwent major upgrades to its facilities and artistic programs. With a renewed focus on public engagement and interdisciplinary collaboration, Jeongdong Theater has strengthened its role as a hub for traditional performing arts and a creative incubator for new work.
This visit to Taiwan marks the theater’s first international tour since its transformation, offering audiences a rare opportunity to experience the depth and beauty of Korean traditional performing arts.
